Vestry Meeting Highlights

January 15, 2020

  • Met with treasurer Gene Lange about closing the 2019 financial books.
  • Rebalanced the 2020 budget with funds received after 2019 and an updated 2020 pledge total.
  • Discussed plans for the annual meeting.
  • Planned to discuss the 2020 parish survey and development of the next strategic plan in February.
  • Discussed coordination of the 2020 Spring2ACTion campaign.

 December 4, 2019

  • Found ways to address the budget shortfall
  • Made a plan for informing and educating the congregation about the revised budget
  • Discussed how to increase the percentage of parishioners who pledge
  • Planned to work with Dominion Energy to increase energy efficiency in the building

 November 13, 2019

  • Discussed ideas to further progress on the strategic plan, including volunteer appreciation, welcoming newcomers, continuing to record and post sermons online, and offering service opportunities for families.
  • Considered how to conclude the current strategic plan and embark upon the next planning period with a new parish survey in 2020.
  • Introduced a new plan for Vestry reporting that has liaisons interacting with coordinators before upcoming events to learn more, find out what help is needed, and keep the Vestry informed.
  • Appreciated those who have pledged and donated to the Capital Campaign, even as we continue our efforts to include more parishioners in financial support of our church.

 October 9, 2019

At its regular meeting on October 9, the Vestry… 

  • Discussed how to encourage parishioners to adequately support Emmanuel financially, given our current size and needs for staff, building and grounds, and programs.
  • Acknowledged that many parishioners may not realize how important active pledging, of any amount, is for the financial health and budgeting of the church.
  • Approved spending on a 5-year plan to upgrade the fire panel to a system that can be maintained to be kept in service for the next 15-20 years.
  • Endorsed Claire Elser to the diocese in her journey toward becoming a transitional deacon.

September 11, 2019 

At its regular meeting on September 11, 2019, the Vestry…

  • Celebrated the success of the recent parish picnic and agreed to hold it at Emmanuel again next year
  • Shared the announcement for the vacant position for Director of Spiritual Formation for Children and Youth
  • Welcomed the preschool director to attend Vestry meetings
  • Decided to look for two Vestry members in the next cycle to be liaisons for (1) building and (2) grounds who can visit often and work with Kelli on the stewardship team
  • Respectfully discussed how to address the practice of sharing political messages on Facebook specifically, and at church generally, in sermons, the newsletter, or on the website (look for an upcoming newsletter article from the Vestry on this topic)

June 12, 2019

At its regular meeting on June 12, 2019, the Vestry… 

  • Discussed developing activities to sustainably act on the strategic plan over the next two years.
  • Approved an expense to repair an electrical conduit on the roof.
  • Reviewed a draft preschool budget. 

May 8, 2019

At its regular meeting on May 8, 2019, the Vestry...

  • Received a preschool update from director Nicole Crochet.
  • Discussed ideas for a sabbatical experience for Chuck.
  • Learned that several more Sunday School teachers are needed for next year.
  • Applauded the recent improvements to building and grounds during the work weekend and other projects, making our church more functional to use, beautiful to enjoy, and safer to access.

April 10, 2019

At its regular meeting on April 10, 2019,the Vestry...

  • Discussed hiring a part-time sexton for facility cleaning and maintenance services.
  • Received a financial update from Treasurer Gene Lange.
  • Learned that playground installation will begin June 17.
  • Applauded the Outreach Team's work in planning Spring2ACTion, which raised $3400 for the Haiti ministry.

March 13, 2019

At its regular meeting on March 13, 2019, the Vestry… 

  • Learned about the EEC Foundation, established in 1993, and how it functions as a component of church financial management and is a vehicle for parishioner support through donations and planned giving;

  • Designated Barbie Frank as delegate to attend annual convention in the fall;

  • Endorsed Clarie Elser to the diocese in support of her vocation;

  • Met in ministry liaison teams to plan for progress in the 5-year strategic plan; and

  • Reviewed plans for this year’s Spring2Action fundraiser in support of our partner parish in Haiti.

February 13, 2019

At its regular meeting on February 13, 2019, the Vestry… 

  • Approved the plan for outdoor space renovation, including a new playground structure and other play equipment, seating areas and fencing;
  • Recognized the preschool’s role in the mission of the church and acknowledged the importance of a healthy preschool-church relationship;
  • Discussed facility maintenance items, such as painting the sanctuary, for long-term planning;
  • Approved the 2019 Parochial Report, an annual submission about our church to the diocese; and
  • Made plans to organize a Spring2ACTion fundraiser focused on outreach.

At its regular meeting on January 16, 2019, the Vestry… 

  • Approved the 2019 budget;
  • Discussed a summary of action steps to implement the strategic plan;
  • Prepared for the annual meeting;
  • Learned about Bishop Curry’s “Way of Love” framework that will be used to guide parish programs.
