Fellowship Events

One of Emmanuel’s greatest strengths is the sense of community and caring we share for one another as well as for others in need. Through our parish activities, members of Emmanuel come together to share fellowship, build friendships and nurture our Emmanuel “family.”

Coffee Hour: After the 10:30 a.m. church service, Emmanuel provides coffee, tea, and light refreshments for adults and
children.

Fellowship Group Gatherings: Parishioners regularly gather for a meal, dessert and/or drinks to share in comaraderie, build friendships and discuss Emmanuel.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper: The youth of Emmanuel prepare a supper of hot delicious pancakes for the church community on Shrove Tuesday, the last day before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday. This traditional event has its roots in the old-world tradition of using up the fats on Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday before beginning the fast of Lent. Everyone is invited to attend.

Easter Egg Hunt: Come and have some Easter Egg fun! We welcome all children to participate in this annual tradition at Emmanuel on Easter morning after the 10:30 a.m. Easter service. In the event of rain, the egg hunt is held downstairs in the church.

Retreat at Shrine Mont: The church retreat is held every spring at Shrine Mont in the Shenandoah Mountains in Orkney Springs, Virginia. Come join us at our Shrine Mont Retreat.

Parish Homecoming Picnic: Emmanuel holds an annual picnic on the beautiful grounds of the Virginia Theological Seminary. We grill hot dogs and hamburgers and have games for the children and provide a unique fellowship opportunity for parishioners.

Blessing of the Animals: In the fall, Emmanuel hosts a blessing of the animals in honor of St. Francis. The Blessing is a short prayer service and each pet will receive a personal blessing by the clergy. All animals are welcome in their cages, on a leash or in a box. Stuffed animals and photos will also be blessed.

Breakfast with Saint Nick: Breakfast with St. Nick is a beloved Emmanuel holiday tradition. Join us in the Parish Hall for a delicious breakfast after the 10:30 a.m. church service, hear the story of the real Saint Nicholas, and enjoy a visit from jolly ole St. Nick himself who will greet each child and listen to their Christmas wishes. Children will find a special surprise if they leave their shoes in the Parish Hall during the 10:30 a.m. service.

Christmas Pageant:  Each year on Christmas Eve, the youth of Emmanuel perform a Christmas Pageant as a part of the Eucharistic Service. The youth group tells the story of Jesus' birth from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke while the younger children act it out. The kids love dressing up in costume and grownup's enjoy seeing the more experienced actors encourage our young "Stars" to play their part. All children from the parish, their friends and their neighbors are invited to join in!

Super Bowl Party: The Parish Hall is transformed into a “movie theater” with a huge TV and lots of comfortable seating.

Yard Sale: Emmanuel’s annual yard sale is usually held in the late summer and is both a community outreach and parish “bonding” event. The yard sale provides an opportunity for those in the Alexandria community to purchase many slightly used or even new items for their homes and families. The yard sale involves scores of parishioners who donate their goods and/or their time to make each year's sale the best ever.
