Alive! Volunteers St. Croix School

Outreach Team Mission Statement

Our mission is to advance the work of Christ outside our parish walls by creating a more humane and just world. We strive to inform, inspire, and involve parishioners in service opportunities and advocacy locally, regionally, and globally and steward our shared time, talent, and treasure.

Outreach Team

The Outreach Team provides us with opportunities to do much more good in the world collectively than we could do individually. The Outreach Team coordinates activities, discusses future initiatives, allocates the Outreach budget, and leads us towards achieving our strategic plan objectives. We meet quarterly and all parishioners are invited to attend our meetings.

We take inspiration from Jesus’ words:

"Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." (Matthew 25:40)

Emmanuel parishioners use their time and talents to help our neighbors in Alexandria. The Outreach Team coordinates the following volunteer efforts:

ALIVE! Furniture Delivery. Emmanuel volunteers participate twice a year to pick up furniture from donors and deliver to families and individuals in need in Alexandria.

ALIVE! Food Collection. Emmanuel collects non-perishable food items and distributes them monthly to hundreds of Alexandria families in need. Emmanuel volunteers support the “Last Saturday Food Distribution” each month, where up to 600 households receive groceries.

Bag Lunch Program. Emmanuel volunteers prepare over 2,000 bag lunches each year to distribute through the Meade Memorial Church Bag Lunch Program.

Carpenter’s Shelter Meals. Emmanuel volunteers prepare and serve two hot meals to residents of the Carpenter’s Shelter each month.

Local Refugee Support. Emmanuel has partnered with Christ Church and other Alexandria area congregations to help meet the needs of local refugees and asylum seekers. A group of Emmanuel parishioners has formed a Care Team to work directly with a refugee family. The Care Team helps with acculturation and identifying issues and needs that can be addressed by outside support. Collectively, Emmanuel has assisted in providing the family with rent assistance, groceries, and material donations.

Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels (MoW) is a program that delivers meals to individuals at home who are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals. Emmanuel participates in the Alexandria MoW program and delivers on four routes (for 40 meals) on the first Monday of each month. A driver and runner are assigned to each route; we are always in need of more volunteers. Time commitment is about two hours once a month from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Rebuilding Together. Emmanuel partnered with Rebuilding Together to conduct an adult service project in Alexandria to repair and improve a house. Rebuilding Together DC Alexandria achieves greater well-being by bringing volunteers and resources together to revitalize communities and improve the homes and lives of low-income residents, including veterans, seniors, individuals living with disabilities, and families with children, all at no cost to them.

Organizations and causes that we support financially:

ALIVE! Programs. Emmanuel provides operational funds to support ALIVE!’s Child Development Center and ALIVE! House. Emmanuel also helps sponsor the annual Alive! Walkathon and Empty Bowls fundraiser.

Christmas Giving Tree. Emmanuel raises money for a specific cause each year.  In 2016 and 2017, the Giving Tree raised funds to support our partner parish in Haiti.

Community Lodgings. Emmanuel supports their back-to-school backpack program for at-risk children. In 2015, Emmanuel provided backpacks and school supplies to 120 low-income Arlandria students.

West End Lazarus Ministry. Emmanuel supports the West End Lazarus Ministry, which serves the working poor, homeless, disabled and those who are experiencing severe financial stress due to job loss, illness or personal loss. Emergency financial assistance, food bags and counseling are provided by volunteers, giving the clients hope and helping them through hardship.

Emmanuel also serves as a meeting place for three Alcoholics Anonymous weekly meetings.

Haiti Partner Parish. Emmanuel has partnered with Ste. Croix Parish in Léogâne, Haiti. Emmanuel supports a school lunch program for students in the kindergarten and primary school. In February 2016, the parish sponsored the Rev. Joseph Sonley (Rector of Ste. Croix Parish) to visit Emmanuel to meet old and new friends, educate the parish, and to co-celebrate the Eucharist. In 2016, Emmanuel sent two parishioners to Ste. Croix Parish to establish personal connections within the parish and school, to discern how Emmanuel could best provide additional resources, and to lay a foundation for possible future mission trips to Ste. Croix. In addition, Emmanuel supports the Singing Rooster coffee NGO through coffee sales within the parish.
